Setivalley
Integrated Organic Farm
The
Setivalley Farm is in an optimal position right now
to further develop their organic practices as the
management and operational systems flow very well.
There is good two-way communication between
management and workers allowing for a productive
learning environment. Thus the workers have
developed a deeper understanding of the techniques
that are being applied which is so vital for the
experimental nature of organic farming.
Currently there is a
large variety of crops and livestock which will both
allow for testing the market as well as playing with
rotations. One direction that I see for the future
would be to integrate livestock (poultry) into
rotation. The diversity of this farm also
inadvertently caters to volunteer opportunity. For
those who are interested in agriculture and
especially those with experience, there is a lot of
chance for experimentation and an exchange of
knowledge. As well, the hosting is so gracious, and
with such a beautiful location, the Setivalley Farm
is an optimal place for a vibrant cultural
experience as well as a peaceful getaway.
Mouja Ecological Organic Farm
Although only 5 kilometers from Pokhara, the lack of
transportation infrastructure have allowed Mouja to
maintain it’s sense of remoteness and serenity.
Mouja is set high above a hillside with rice paddies
falling away all around you. It is a surreal
setting, especially at sunrise. Currently, the
farming practices do not allow for steady volunteer
work however the prospect of a future coffee
plantation would benefit greatly from any knowledge
and experience that can be brought to the table. The
hosts are very friendly and helpful, and the
facilities quite comfortable. There is much to
explore in this area as well, and many friendly
faces in the local village. Also, the local school
suffers from a lack of teachers and resources and
would be quite welcoming of any volunteers
interested in donating their time.
Tibetan Refugee Community Farm
The hosting and facilities are very comfortable in
Jampling. Although there is little opportunity for
work on the farm, it is a nice place to visit and
perhaps experience Buddhism and Tibetan Culture.
There seems to be ample resources for further
agricultural development in the future.
Mount View Organic & Permaculture
The location of this proposed operation is so
beautiful with a great view of the Annapurna Range
and the Pokhara Valley. The land offers much
opportunity for a successful and varied permaculture
operation. This project would greatly benefit from
an experienced volunteer, interested in taking some
time to help with design and establishment of the
farm. In the future, I see this as an ideal location
for a peaceful getaway with an opportunity to spend
some time in the garden, and currently I see this as
an optimal place for volunteers looking for a new
pet project.
Suggestions
My major guidance for SADP would be regarding the
development of the Agri-tourism project. I see it as
a great opportunity for environmentally friendly
tourism development, as well as a realistic way to
supplement income for farmers during the difficult
transition into organic farming. However, as an NGO
seeking funding from development organizations and
other countries it is important to maintain the
focus and funding of SADP streaming directly into
agricultural and related projects. The side-projects
for the development of tourism must be made a
private endeavor taken on by the farmers.
